From research to the industry

Sobi Thomas started his Blue World journey in 2019 and is now a Senior System Architect Engineer. He had extensive experience in the research of energy systems, however, he strived to use his knowledge in the industry.

Sobi Thomas is originally from India, where he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degree. Thereafter, his interest in fuel cells took him to Denmark. In 2014, he first started as a research assistant at the world-renowned Department of Energy Technology at Aalborg University, and after eight months, he got an opportunity to start his PhD in fuel cells in collaboration with the fuel cell company, SerEnergy. In this partnership, Sobi got to know Anders Korsgaard and Mads Bang, who then later Co-founded Blue World Technologies together with Mads Friis Jensen and respectively works as Chief Executive Officer, Chief Technology Officer, and Chief Commercial Officer.

After completing his PhD, he got the position as Postdoc at the same department. There he was responsible for supervising students alongside performing research in energy systems. When Blue World Technologies was founded, Sobi reached out to Mads Bang as he wanted to try something new after working with research for the past six years and to use his HT-PEM fuel cell knowledge.

“I contacted Mads Bang, as I knew he had co-founded a new company working with fuel cells. I saw it as a perfect match as I had the opportunity to work with system level control development for HT-PEM fuel cell hybrid system. So back in 2019, I started my Blue World journey, and it has just evolved from there.”

Making a green career

In 2021, Sobi became a Senior System Architect Engineer. He is still working on the system level, but now he has more responsibility and is working closely together with the Chief Technology Officer, Mads Bang. Sobi is part of our Platform and Test team, and he explains that there is a great dynamic between the team members.

“The thing I find most interesting about working at Blue World is my team. The fact that one of the company values is taking responsibility, is also reflected in the team. Everybody is ready to help, and people are open to discussions. They are dedicated and motivated which I believe is the reason why they are ready to go the extra mile for solving any challenges we encounter.”

Sobi states that he really enjoys the intercultural environment at Blue World Technologies. The company has been good at accommodating the different cultures, as he does not notice the different cultures as much during the daily work, as everyone has a shared focus on the development of core components, and a shared target to solve the challenges that arise within the technology.

“Every morning we have a 15-minute scrum meeting that sets the target for the day. I really enjoy these discussions as we get to hear the perspectives from the different backgrounds people have within the team. There might arise a suggestion from a mechanical engineer’s perspective that I have not thought of as a control engineer.”
